Week 1: Introduction

Hi guys! My name is Marissa Dutton, and I am a Mathematics major who will be graduating in December. I honestly can not express my excitement any better than saying FINALLY! I feel like I have been in school forever (five and a half years), and at times, it seemed like I would never reach this point, but I have finally made it to the home stretch. In four short months, I will be a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, and I cannot wait! As far as work, I have no clue what I plan to do. Before transferring to OU, I was attending a university in Louisiana as a Math Education major, but when I moved here, I changed my major to Math. I think I will still let teaching be an option after graduation, but other than that, I really have no idea what I want to do. I guess I have four months to figure that out, so I better get on that!

For those who have never taken a class with Laura Gibbs, let me just warn you, you will love this class! I love the way the class is set up because you feel like you have so much control over the grade you receive. This is my second class I have taken with her, and I enjoyed her Indian Epics class so much, I had to come back for her Myth and Folklore class. I also needed another upper division elective, so her class was an obvious choice! Make sure you stay ahead on the assignments, even if it is just one day ahead. If at all possible, try working ahead so you can get done with the class early. That way you can focus on some of your other classes towards finals time. Laura is great with encouragement and feedback, so I hope you all enjoy this class!

I spent a lot of time with family this summer, including babysitting my little cousins. On of our favorite days was when we went to the zoo. They loved going into this area with the colorful birds. We were able to hold some of them, and this one liked me so much he climbed all the way to the top of my head using my hair as a ladder. I spared you guys the pictures of his climb to the top of my head because my facial expressions were not exactly the most attractive. I was afraid of him peeing on my head! Haha

  1. Hi Marissa! I definitely know what you mean about feeling like you have been in school for forever! I am in my 5th year victory lap right now and still have a long way to go school wise (med-school)! I also took Epics of India with Laura a little over a year ago and couldn't agree with you more about how she runs her classes! Anyways, I was great getting to know a little more about you!

  2. Congrats on you graduating in December!!! That is such an accomplishment and relief. I also was a transfer student and am just starting my third year here. The church I go to is Wildwood Community Church and it was the very first church I went to when I transferred here, not knowing anyone and I've never gone anywhere else since! We have a college group that means on Sunday mornings at 10:50am and also a couple of regular services, I would LOVE to talk more about it with you !

  3. I am so glad you are back for another class, Marissa - and it is fun reading the Introductions a second time because, honestly, I had forgotten you were a math major!!! I started out as a math major in school, but when I took my first foreign language class (I took Russian because that was recommended as a choice for math majors), I was HOOKED, and I spent the rest of my undergrad career very happily studying languages... and of course I love my job now, because even though I am teaching English, I get to work with stories from all over the world! Anyway, I hope you will enjoy this class too... it is sooooo WIDE OPEN compared to the focus of Indian Epics. I am excited to see what you will do with your Storybook this time!

  4. Hello Marissa! My name is Anthony Clark. I think It is so cool that you are majoring in Math. Math is probably my least favorite subject. I just struggled in it hard, but i'm glad to be done with Calc 2 at least. You must be really great at math to major in it! Hopefully you can find out what you want to do after you graduate. I just want to give you an early Congratulations on graduating too.

  5. Congratulations on graduating so soon! I don't know how anyone could make it through a math major, after taking calculus two I was D.O.N.E done. I guess some people would probably feel the same way about all the science classes that I have to take though! I really like your picture too, I didn't know that they let you interact with the birds at the zoo.

  6. Marissa,
Oh, the struggles of figuring out what to do once you've completed a degree in Mathematics. I'm in the same boat with you. I'm graduation in May with a B.S. in Mathematics, and I don't have much of a hold on what I want to do with it either. I hope you find something great once you graduate, though!

  7. Hey Marissa! That’s awesome that you’re a math major! My brain could never seem to get the hang of the subject, so I completed my college math requirements in high school and stuck with Psychology instead. And congratulations on being so close to completing your major! That’s so exciting! Even though you’re not sure what job you want right now, I bet you’ll figure it out by the time graduation comes around. Since it’s math, it seems like there would be a number of interesting jobs available.

  8. Hello Marrissa! Thanks for sharing! I commend you for choosing to be a math major! I love math, but probably not enough to elect it to be my major! Thank you for your tips and recommendations for this class, its comforting to know that you have already had experience with Laura Gibbs as the professor! I love your picture of you with the birds, I bet that was lots of fun! I'm guessing it was at the Oklahoma City Zoo? Also, I noticed you attended school in Louisiana, how was that? I have family in Shreveport so I am pretty familiar with the state!
Anyways, good luck with everything and congratulations on graduating!

  9. Marissa,

Congrats on your upcoming graduation! It is so exciting and I can't wait for that feeling in the spring when I graduate. I think it is so awesome that you transferred. That is something that I always admire because of the immense courage it takes. I am realizing how great Professor Gibbs is and how much I love this class too!

Good luck with the rest of your semester and congrats again on graduation!

  10. Math is my worse subject but I am glad you are good at it! Congratulations on graduating in December, I am so jealous. I completely understand feeling like it would never come soon enough! You are so right about Laura, she is an amazing professor and I have loved this class so much. Wonderful photo as well and what a beautiful bird. I imagine you had a great time at the zoo and with family. Good luck with the course and everything!

  11. I've been in school for five and half years too! So we're both super duper seniors. We rule. My best friend's boyfriend took six years and he said you have to have a "cool down" lap after the victory lap so you don't tear a muscle or anything. I completely agree haha.
I can't believe you majored in math. That just sounds like five and a half years of crying everyday to me. I'm about to take the GRE and realized how much math I don't remember, so that will be interesting.
    Nice getting to know you!

  12. Hey Marissa! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! I am also graduating in December! And like you, I am also not very sure what I want to do when I graduate…it is such a daunting question when people ask “What do you plan to do when you graduate?” I feel like I have so many interests and aspirations that I can’t pick just one! Anyways, it was nice to read your introduction! Good luck with everything!

  13. I’ve also been in college for the same length of time and am graduating in December as well! Like you, I don’t know exactly what I want to do after I graduate, but I am keeping the possibility of becoming a teacher out there, although I’m far from being committed to pursuing that direction. It looks like we’re in the same boat in a lot of ways. I hope you can get things figured out for yourself soon. I hope the same for myself!

  14. Hey Marissa! Thank you so much for leaving a comment on my Storytelling post about the two travelers losing their photographs. I really appreciate you taking the time to give me feedback on my story! That's so exciting that you're graduating in December! I'm sure you will find something great to do. I can't imagine having a Math degree, I am absolutely terribly at math. Like really awful. I can't even leave tips without my calculator (and yes I know the double the tax trick or something like that). I just don't trust myself with numbers it get complicated. I wish you the best of luck, the world always needs some great teachers! :)

  15. Marissa, congratulations on your upcoming graduation! I’m sure it’s terrifying, but it also sounds like you’re ready to be finished and go out and do whatever you’re going to do! I wish you the best of luck, I’m sure you’ll figure it all out! Thank you for the advice on the class, I have noticed that staying a little bit ahead makes everything so much easier!

  16. Marissa, congratulations on almost being done with school! Even if you don't figure out a solid plan for after graduation, that's okay; sometimes, the best adventure is just seeing where life takes you. I sincerely hope that you find what you love to do, whether it be teaching or something else to do with mathematics. Best of luck to you in the future!

  17. Oh no! I've had a bird pee on my face before too, it's not very fun. Especially when your brother is an animal person and adds facts about what’s really in bird pee.
However, it’s really exciting that you’re almost through! And while teaching is always an option, don’t stress too much about what you’re doing next. As my Mom keeps telling me, now’s the time to have adventures and make it up as you go along. There’s nothing wrong with a job at the convenience store while you figure out the next bit. Hope you have a great last semester!

  18. Hi Marissa! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! I’m done in December as well and we only have 1 month left! You couldn’t be more right about working ahead in this class and it has definitely been enjoyable. Now that it’s the end of the semester I’m curious as to what you figured out as far as what you’ll be doing when you graduate. Regardless, best of luck and congrats!

  19. I am in the same boat as you in graduating in December and not knowing where life will take me. I graduated early, in three and a half years, so I am ahead of my friends. The goal is to go to physical therapy school and continue on to become a physical therapist. Crossing my fingers. I know how stressful it can be graduating and not knowing what the future holds, but it sounds like you have some options with your Math major. I love how you included the picture of the zoo! I love the zoo but have never been to the OKC one. I am from Dallas so I went to the Dallas zoo and Fort Worth zoo as a kid. The Dallas zoo has a room like that with the birds and I love going in there and letting them fly around me! Sounds like you had fun!

  20. I am also going to be graduating in December. I don't really have any idea where or what I will be doing when I finally graduate either. I completely agree with your relief in finally being done with school. It has also taken me five and a half years in order to finish. One of my friends has a bird that is similar in size, whose name is kiwi. Those kinds of birds a really intelligent. Good luck with the rest of the semester!
